I haven't seen the movie, I didn't even know it existed, and here I haven't heard about it until now. I doubt I'll want to see it, I am in general against making movies out of good books, though there are exceptions. Well, we have so many opinions, it is rather natural. I am an atheist too, but no, what you call 'theology' did not bother me (nor did I perceive it as theology). As for your friend's opinion... I think the Rhetorical Hammer she mentions exists in her mind, not in the books. We all read projections of the text on our minds. For me it worked, for her it did not. The key word in her description, I guess, is 'depressing'. If I understood it correctly, she thinks not just that reading it is depressing as reading any bad book is, but that the author conveys depression as a message. I think she is deeply wrong.
